Kia readies male fantasy Super Bowl ad

A babe, a band and a brawler — Kia hopes those three elements will make its Super Bowl ad stand out from the rest.
The automaker has enlisted supermodel Adriana Lima, rockers Mötley Crüe and mixed martial arts fighter Chuck Liddell for its 60-second ad for the Kia Optima Limited. The idea is one man's fondest dream.
"As we're dreaming at night, our true desires come out," says Michael Sprague, Kia Motors America head of marketing and communications.
This fellow envisions driving an Optima around a track filled with manly fantasies such as a skimpily-clad Lima, Liddell fighting and Mötley Crüe onstage doing Kickstart My Heart. Sprague calls it "the ultimate man's dream" yet is quick to add "but it's not offensive to women, either."
Kia wants buzz during the Feb. 5 game, but also before and after, says David Angelo, creative chief at Kia ad agency David & Goliath.
The ad will launch in movie theaters Feb. 3, and Kia also will air 15-second teaser ads on TV beforehand. Kia also will leverage the Twitter and Facebook followings of the ad's stars.

UFC: Dana White Responds to ESPN's Outside the Lines
The bad blood between the UFC and ESPN continues to boil in the wake of the worldwide leader in sports' recent televised piece on fighters' pay.
On a recent episode of ESPN's Outside the Lines, the program details the disparity in pay between the upper echelon stars in the UFC and their lower tier fighters. The piece claims that the lesser known combatants are "basically fighting for crumbs" and that there is a culture of silence preventing fighters from speaking out for fear of losing their jobs.
UFC President Dana White has not hid his displeasure for the piece, tweeting, "Can't stand the lying 2 faced media [expletive]!! So glad we did this one right cause ESPN can NOT be trusted."
Not to let the issue rest, White released a video of his own today, disputing the points brought up by ESPN's program.
In the video, posted above, White starts off by calling the piece "trash and one-sided," saying that ESPN does not care about mixed martial arts. To combat some of the claims made by the piece, UFC legends Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin and Matt Serra talk at length in the video about all the opportunities the promotion has given them.
As a police officer, Griffin states that he was making a modest $30,000 a year, but after his stint on the Ultimate Fighter, Griffin says, "I made substantially more in one year with the UFC than I would have working 15 years in law enforcement."
Griffin, as well as the other fighters interviewed, also talk about the multiple bonuses available that act as incentives to perform inside the Octagon.
Additionally, an extended look at Zuffa CEO Lorenzo Fertitta's interview on Outside the Lines is shown where Fertitta points out that the issue is not taboo to talk about among fighters and that the UFC has made many fighters "millionaires."
"These guys are making more money than they've ever made," Fertitta says. "Some of these guys are set for life."
With so much tension between these two sports juggernauts, repairing this relationship will be easier said than done.

Video: Chuck Liddell Avenges Losses to Quinton Jackson
Chuck Liddell and Quinton Jackson faced off for a third time last week in Las Vegas, but this time, they met in video game form. The fighters, who met at PRIDE Final Conflict 2003 and UFC 71, played 'UFC Undisputed 3', which is scheduled to be released in February, in front of a crowd prior to the UFC 137 weigh-ins. It was an opportunity for "The Iceman" to exact revenge on his rival "Rampage," who holds two official wins over the former UFC light heavyweight champion.

Chuck Liddell Rappells Down a 51 Story Building in Las Vegas

Anderson Silva is The Spider, but Chuck Liddell is Spiderman. The other day he rappelled down the 51 story Rio Hotel in Las Vegas. The stunt was designed to raise money for the Special Olympics, and Chuck bravely volunteered. As Mike Goldberg might say: No fear of heights, has Chuck Liddell. Here's a video of Chuck talking about the event, as well as one of him strapping on his gear. Plus more pics of the actual rappel. More than $50k was raised. Well done, SpiderChuck!

UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell will rappel 51 stories in Las Vegas to benefit the Special Olympics.

UFC Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell is a tough guy.
But he's never done anything like what he's about to do Saturday -- rappel all 51 stories of the Rio All Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.
"It should be interesting," said Liddell, whose related experience includes just a few workouts on a rock wall and a demonstration or two -- but "nothing that high."
But he's committed to doing it, because of the cause: The Special Olympics, which he long has supported, and which is the beneficiary of this "Over the Edge" event that also comprises some local celebrities and had raised more than $56,000.
Liddell, who retired from the octagon with a 21-8 record, said his wife, Heidi, originally wanted to join him in the drop. But she now is pregnant with a girl -- due in late December, Liddell said -- and obviously can't fall the 51 floors.
Liddell said he himself will make some adjustments once the due date nears, likely cutting back his road schedule as UFC's vice president of business development because "I want to be around when my baby is born."
But for now, he's ready to tick another box on his resume of toughness.
"It's something different," he said. "But if it looks crazy and gets some attention for the cause, I'm all for it."

MMA Crossfire - UFC Bad Blood: Liddell vs. Ortiz DVD a solid pickup
Today, the Ultimate Fighting Championship officially releases one of the more anticipated sagas to the public: UFC Bad Blood: Liddell vs Ortiz. Distributed by Anchor Bay Entertainment, and produced by PositiveImage Video, we see Chuck Liddell and "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito OrtizUFC president Dana White, who managed both fighters at one point. While the story is skewed towards The Iceman's point of view, the spirit of the story shines through, capturing one of the most exciting times in UFC history. articulate their viewpoints with a third viewpoint is provided by
Welcome back to The Crossfire.
"Somebody's going to get their ass kicked tomorrow." - Tito Ortiz.
"If he's willing to stand up and strike with me, he's going to get knocked out - and he knows it." - Chuck Liddell.
The main story is shot in typical UFC Primetime style with the trademark quality. It holds up well overall to viewing on my 2011 MacBook Pro's 1080p screen (1920 x 1080) but some of the older standard definition sequences are predictably grainy. There is also a Blu-Ray version offered (not reviewed). The sound is also good overall, but I remember the crowd being much louder during the actual fights. This is noticeable on the UFC 129 DVD as well. We see Tito and Chuck return to their old stomping grounds and recount the early days of their career and the UFC. Longtime UFC fans will appreciate the stroll down memory lane.
The bonus footage is standard, at least on the DVD version: The UFC 47 and UFC 66 fights, and the UFC 66 countdown. It would have been great to have more of of the backstage Ultimate Fighter footage there as bonus material (some is included in the main story). I also noticed that Tito's girlfriend, Jenna Jameson, was not interviewed for whatever reason while Chuck Liddell's fiancee Heidi Northcott was. It would have been nice to have heard from her or have it explained why she was unable to talk for the DVD.
While not extensive, there is no question UFC Bad Blood: Liddell vs. Ortiz is a pick-up. The story of Chuck and Tito is the stuff of legend any MMA fan will want to have it on their shelf. Each one completed the other and because of that, we were treated to some great fights and moments that continue to stand the test of time. It's interesting to see fighters like a young baby-faced Josh Koscheck in awe of Chuck and Tito in the octagon.
The Crossfire's Verdict: Pick it up.

Australia has a hold on 'Iceman' of martial arts

Ultimate Fighting fans know Chuck Liddell as The Iceman. But since retiring last year, the 41-year-old mixed marital artist now is known as The EVP -- the executive vice president of business development for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He also is featured in the new DVD and Blu-ray release "UFC: Bad Blood -- Liddell vs. Ortiz," which documents Liddell's long-standing rivalry with fellow MMA superstar Tito Ortiz. Liddell, who also competed on "Dancing With the Stars," jokes that taking a roundhouse kick to the face is nothing compared with mastering the pasodoble.
Q: What is your favorite vacation destination?A: We were just in Australia, and it was amazing. We went to Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast. When we were in Melbourne, they said it was like Chicago. And that seemed about right. I really do like Chicago. I'm usually not a big city person, but Chicago has always been great. Anyhow, I'd like to make it back to Australia. I haven't been to Sydney yet, and I'd like to visit there. I like Hawaii too and try to get there a couple times a year. I'm not really good at surfing, but I've got my kids started, and they're really enjoying it.
Q: Do you prefer to vacation in cold or warm destinations?
A: I'd say that I tend to favor warm weather places. But I've just started snowboarding, and I'm really having a lot of fun doing that. I'm really just a 12-year-old kid if you look at my maturity level. My kids laugh at me because I'm just like them. We have a great time together. I also heard that Japan has an ice sculpture fest that I'd like to see. I speak a little bit of Japanese, just from my martial arts training growing up.
Q: What is an underrated country?
A: Canada. I love traveling up there. They have some of the nicest people I've ever met. It does get a little cold up there, but it's still worth visiting. I'll be going to Toronto in a couple weeks for work, and I'm really looking forward to it.
Q: What hotels stand out?
A: I like the Montage hotels (montagehotels.com). In Las Vegas, I've always loved the Red Rock Resort (redrocklasvegas.com) and the Palms (palms.com). The W Hotel (wsouthbeach.com) in Miami was pretty awesome as well.
Q: What are some of your favorite cities?
A: For buildings, it's Paris. For relaxing in the sun, it's Miami. I always have a good time there. Foodwise, I'd have to go with Paris and anywhere in Italy. I'm a big Italian food fan.
Q: What would be your dream trip?
A: I've always heard great things about the Greek Islands, and I've never been there. So that's a definite must.
Q: What is your guilty pleasure when you're on the road?
A: When I'm on vacation, dieting is off. And if great food is around, I will eat every chance that I get. I remember being asked in Italy, "Are you going to stop eating any time soon?" Because I'd want to eat again after a couple hours. I like to try all kinds of foods, and I'll try just about anything at least once. I love spicy food. One time after I did an interview about liking hot sauce, people sent me all these bottles of ridiculously spicy bottles of hot sauce. But I don't mind. As long as it tastes good, I'll take another bite!Source: Chicago Tribune
